The article examines the adaptive learning system as a system that is able to render assistance to each student to achieve the optimal level of intellectual development in accordance with his/her natural abilities and inclinations.The main advantages of adaptive learning system using information systems are examined. The problem of adaptive learning in the modern information systems is studied. It is found that planning and organization of educational process, selection of types of tasks, levels of complexity, consistency of presentation, carrying out various types of control, definition of criteria for assessment of each type of task belong to the methodological aspects of adaptive learning in educational information systems. The technical aspects include: an algorithm that offers to move to the next level provided proper carrying out of most of the tasks or return to the previous level taking into account errors made when carrying out tasks; an algorithm of forming a series of tasks according to the student’s knowledge level; assessment of educational achievements of the students. The examples of adaptive learning in educational information systems are reviewed.
