Multi-criteria (vector) optmization of military rations under presidial and field conditions

Description: It was shown that standing armies appeared actually simultaneously with formation of primeval states and has been remaining their standard attribute. The experience of past wars and current armed conflict prove the importance of military logistics, and a substantial component of the latter is subsistence support of forces as timely and balanced catering of personnel enables to maintain adequate military’s preparedness level, sound social and psychological environment in units, reduces risks of diseases and fastens recovery of wounded or injured. It is emphasized that within millennia lack or low quality of chew caused diseases and deaths among soldiers and, as a result, increased non-combat loss. The example of ancient Rome shows a fundamental approach to bannock formation ensuring sustainment of energy loss, reasonable catering and improved immunity. The question of mobile field kitchens and canned foods introduction in Napoleonic Grande Armee and Russian Imperial Army is discussed. Direct connection is shown between diseases of the digestive system and low quality, poor nutrition. Food ration parameters are specified for a number of European armies at the end of XIX century. The period of scientific basis formation for nutritional management is described when scholars began detailed studies of nutrition physiology and chemistry, protein balance, physiological rates of nutrients and role of mineral components in nutrition. Peculiarities are discussed of nutrition rations of wounded at hospitals. The problem is stated of optimal military ration formation under presidial and field conditions. Criteria for single-criteria problems are selected as caloric value and minimum cost of ration. The problems are solved by linear programming method. For multi-criteria (vector) optimization we propose to apply a convolution of criteria maximum caloric value and minimum cost of ration which realizes uniform (Chebyshev -type) approximation of problem solution to optimum. Issuing from the main object of work as development of methodological approach to solution of multi-criteria dietary problem, we exacted the list of foods, their caloric values, contents of nutrients, such as proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins A, B1, C, costs of foods included to rations, from historical sources. The ration developed after almost 50 years of experience and many years of intense research, is shown to actually coincide with optimal ration obtained as a result of our problem solution.
