The article examines an approach to improving the cargo aircraft performance characteristics by selecting and replacing the propulsion engine. An-124 "Ruslan" cargo aircraft was used as the object for the research. For the purposes of preliminary studies, 34 engines by different engine companies with the thrust from 229 kN to 511 kN in the take-off mode were selected. The characteristics and technical excellence of the selected engines as a part of the aircraft system were assessed. Seven engines were recommended for the further design and layout solutions for the upgraded aircraft. The specific characteristics of the engines that can be used in the aircraft were compared. There are the results of the aircraft characteristics examination depending on different propulsion engines.
