In the article the method of determination of generation of aviation engine of the AI-222 family for light combat aircraft is resulted. It is shown, that the origin of principle of new necessities of aviation technique, which can not be satisfied by its constituents, precedes to appearance of new generations of engines. Estimation of technical perfection of aviation engines is conducted and their technical development is grounded, that largely predetermines the conquest by aviation high-quality new indexes and application domains. It is shown, that engine AI-222-25F on power-mass indexes corresponds to the engines of 4th generation, and on the indexes of the gazodynamic loading he far excels a 4th generation. The system of automatic control of engine, that is used in his composition, conforms to requirement to the engines of 5th generation.
